Most homes can benefit from solar, but a few factors determine how much.
- Roof orientation. South-facing roofs capture the most sun, though east and west facing roofs still perform well.
- Shade. Heavy shade from trees or nearby buildings reduces output; some shading can be designed around.
- Roof condition and age. A roof near the end of its life may be worth replacing before panels go on, since the panels last for decades.
- Your electric usage. The more electricity you use, the more there is to offset and the faster solar pays off.
